Winterley Wharf

Return to Layouts

Winterley Wharf

This is a new layout, built to fit the limited space available within my modelling room. Measuring only 11 feet by 2 feet 3 inches, it was a challenge to include features that I like and to provide some interesting running and shunting opportunities.

Only roads and the canal served the small town of Winterley until the Great Western Railway decided to tunnel through the chalky hill and serve the town. The railway used the opportunity to build a canal wharf to allow for the exchange of goods between the canal and the railway.

Two routes now serve the railway. From the main railway network, the double track main line passes through Abbotstone, whilst at Winterley Junction where the branch line from Shawton joins, the track is single to Winterley. Trains to and from Shawton use the bay platform.

The area modelled is within the red dotted lines:

The layout is fully (some would say ‘over’) signalled and all are operated using a mechanically interlocked lever frame with 26 levers. These include levers for facing point locks. Servos will be operating the signals and ‘Tortoise’ motors will be used to change points.

Operation is either by conventional DC or DCC or a mixture with some safety features to make sure the two are kept separate.;

Use of a cassette in the fiddle yard allows several different trains to be represented.
