ABOUT US

The Winchester Railway Modellers have been together for over 50 years. The first meeting was called on the 15th July 1959. 14 persons attended and agreed to form the 'Winchester and District Model Railway Club'. Meetings were held on Wednesdays every two weeks. It was also agreed to hold the Annual General Meeting each September/October. Maurie Graves was elected Treasurer, a position that he held for 47 years until his unexpected and sudden death in May 2007.
In 1961 a club room was found at the Lawn Tavern, Winchester, but in 1968 the club moved to a new premises - the air raid shelter in Hyde Church churchyard.
1970 brought 'The South Hampshire Association of Railway Modellers (S.H.A.R.M). The Winchester Model Railway Club (as it was then known) was a founder member of the association. The first S.H.A.R.M exhibition was held at Eastleigh town hall in October 1971.
In the summer of 1974 the club yet again moved premises, this time to a barn in Owslebury, the home of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Shaw. Our current chairman, Mr. John Shaw was elected chairman at the AGM of 1975.
Details were given to the club of a proposed new premises at the AGM of 1987. They were accepted and an anonymous donation of 1,000 was received to assist with the renovation of the building, and it is where we still play trains today.

WRM has just under 30 members with a wide range of interests in model railways, from GWR to Virgin Trains, scratch building locomotives to DCC operation. We meet every Wednesday from 7.30pm till 9.30pm, come rain or shine, summer or winter. Our club room is based just outside of Winchester where we have a large barn big enough to take 3 layouts and 30 club members.

We attend local exhibitions in the south, but can go further a-field, so you may bump into us wherever you are. At exhibitions not only do we bring along one of our layouts, occasionally we show off our knowledge of modelling skills, with demonstrations and tips available to the public.

If you are interested in becoming a member of WRM, then you can contact either our chairman, or our secretary. They will be more than pleased to help you and answer any queries you may have. If you would like to come and visit us, please do not just turn up un-announced. Talk to either our chairman or secretary and they will arrange with you when is best, and will give you directions to the club room. Contact details can be found on the contact page.
